This again shows their completely medival concept of marriage: it is not about “consummation”, it is about recognising basic rights: property, inheritance, adoption, visitation, etc.

About as medieval as the words, maidenhead, dowry, the actual meaning of “wife” which originally meant simply “woman” and whose origin may have come from another root, meaning “shame” or “pudenda”.

Thank goodness we’re no longer property, although there are enough out there who want us to revert to that status.
