When millions of people are in the streets, day in and day out, the media calculations of “what will drive ratings” was based on factors that do not apply today.

Also, there was no cable TV in 1973; there was 3 networks subject to the Fairness Doctrine, and a handful of independent stations in big cities that mostly did old movies and sitcom reruns. Every city had multiple newspapers.
