It’s a damn good bet that what caused it was a combination of fuel, oxygen, and an ignition source. It’s just lazy, imprecise writing.

I know a certain someone who, upon hearing “The cause of the crash of flight XXX is under investigation”, always says, “Gravity”. It is not an endearing trait, although I did laugh the first time.
