re: #296 Dark_Falcon

Would be murderers don’t seem to have a problem murdering law enforcement officers who are armed and in uniform, so why would anyone who is intent upon committing murder be fearful of attacking and killing a Marine (who would be unarmed). The murder rate of law enforcement officers has dropped with an increase in the use of body armor (bullet proof vests), and improved medical treatment. See this study for breakdown of police-involved homicides (both police killing others, and felons killing police).

Would this particular person, who happens to be a Marine, be a deterrent? Possibly. Then again, school shootings while heinous and deadly, are infrequent and make up only a fraction of the nearly 10k killed in firearms homicides annually.

Besides, which is preferable? Having to station someone at every school or public place to thwart an attack, or finding ways to restrict access to firearms in the first place to those who are unstable, seek violence, are felons, or in other words - people that most people would not want to have access to firearms under any circumstances and which would prevent the possible loss of life down the line (including said Marine dad who could be killed in confronting that potential killer).
