No, they don’t want to be associated with things that advocate harming the president. Not only is such advocacy illegal, but it also might rile up an Obama hater enough to actually attempt to kill him, and the NRA does know such an assassination attempt would be disastrous for them.

Two thoughts:

a) that’s probably the only motivation that might actually be true
b) why would an assassination attempt on a president that a non-trivial portion of the country despises/thinks is a Marxist socialist Muslim Kenyan terrorist be bad for the NRA when the murder of 20 first graders wasn’t?
