I think the ‘revolution’ he led was one of objectification, and not freedom. Although his magazine would frequently write about freedom, we can see here, to no one’s surprise, it was really about objectification.

What powers this culture of objectification? The fear of loneliness, and everything that accompanies that fear. This is a most powerful motivator, a most powerful determinant of our psyche.

It is not easy for people to fight a fear that is so large and powerful. For someone to do so, this is a rare and extraordinary feat.

And it leads, in the end, to great loneliness. For him, and for those girls who fall prey to whatever enticements they THINK he’s offering them.

It’s what makes this story so very incredibly sad.
