I was never much of a hard core atheist; I always fell into the “probably not” category.

I always thought that if there is or was a God, he is or was a scientist, not a temperamental old grouch in a robe taking petty vengeance on everybody and everything that dares look at Him cross-eyed.

But you know, when I mention that “scientist” theory to friends, they look at me as if I told them I believed 1 and 1 equals 3.

For whatever reason, the old grouch in the robe seems to be more comforting to people than do certain other equally absurd ideas.
