They did get nuked though. Not that there was much point in nuking them. They were bombed pretty much into oblivion by then. And they were cut off from the resources required to keep their military machine running.

We dropped the nukes because the alternatives were accepting a conditional surrender or the invasion of the Home Islands, the deaths of up to a million servicemen, and the virtual eradication of the Japanese.
