Looking at the Best Buy website, you can easily do something for under $500. Several options under $250 before tax.

I don’t have any good experiences with a particular brand at this point, although I hate Sony with a fiery passion and would never recommend their products to anyone, so maybe avoid them.

Apple certainly has a good rep at least when it comes to dealing with problems down the road but you are going to pay through the nose for it. They are excluded from that under $500 number.

From a specs standpoint, even if all you are looking at is web-surfing, I still might recommend looking at more than the basic 4GB of memory. That’s really the primary spec I would consider in a laptop for those purposes. There’s some options there that have 6GB and that would probably be fine. (Honestly, 4 is probably fine, but it’s hard to replace so having some room for it to grow isn’t a bad plan.)
