He did a great job of whipping the Army of the Potomac into shape after the First Battle of Bull Run, and I understand he was a crackerjack railroad executive. Unfortunately he rose to the level of his incompetency.

And aspired to go much higher. He ran against Lincoln in the election of 1864.
