Now that I think about it, we know relatively little about prions. Nuclear explosion might just be the energy source they need. They might be in their chrysalis form as we know them. Something much worse could emerge.

Prions are funny things that basically turn out to be a widely expressed protein folded badly. It won’t do it on its own, but if you expose the normally folded protein to the badly folded one, it’ll take on the bad shape.

It’s not living in any real sense, but it is one of those things that Evolution makes inevitable.
