That’s another reason I want a Nikon SLR: They haven’t changed their lens mount in my lifetime. My mother still has good sized collection of Nikon SLR lens from the 1980s that I could use. Probably won’t get the chance though, due to high costs.

If you have access to good Nikon glasses you should buy a used Nikon film camera. You can get a pro camera like an F-100 for $229 from Adorama or simpler models for even less. You could even get an F2 on Ebay for less than a hundred.
If you buy a digital Nikon be aware that the cheaper digital are DX. That means that your mothers lenses will work but not always as intended. To take full advantage of them on a digital Nikon you need an FX-body, like a D3 or a D700, and they are expensive.
