Nowadays as well you have three types of sorts of “unnamed sources” as well. The one that releases info off the record as a trial balloon, the bureaucrats who release info early but who know it’s coming out soon,(as seen in the ABC reporting on the xmas day terror event,) and the one that’s out to smear. I suspect that Fox uses the latter more than most.

I think there is the fourth kind: The whistleblower type who wants to get info out but fears retribution. Too bad that kind seems to be the rarest of all.
