IDK. Romney was competent enough to be a centrist Republican governor and to run various high-profile public and private projects.

There’s only so much you can do to disguise the fact that you’re going to screw over 90% of the population, keep 9% in a tenuous holding pattern, and hand the loot to yourself and the rest of the 1%. What it ultimately boils down to IMO is how many people actually a) figure this out, b) realize that it’s happening to them specifically, and c) aren’t placated by the fact that the brown people get screwed even worse.

The GOP hasn’t bothered to hide any of the things that you mentioned for some time yet they now have the majority in both houses of Congress. Republican governors who fucked over their states were handily re-elected. When Democratic voters haven’t figured things out sufficiently to show up at the polls in a crucial mid-term I see little hope for voters in general to do so.
