I doubt he’ll walk it back too. His whole campaign is an avalanche of xenophobic bullshit and it’s gotten him to the top of the polls. Why stop now? The base seems to love it.

This is what folks continue to miss, trying to appeal to the better angels of the GOP and conservatism in this country: assholes like Trump are flourishing, because this is what their audience WANTS. It’s what the audience is begging for, and they’re getting it in spades now. There’s no ‘electoral consequence’ for them saying this shit, because the rise in the polls IS their electoral consequence. The fawning media coverage IS their electoral consequence. They say this not just because they can get away with it, but are being rewarded, consistently, for saying it.
