I’d put it this way. I, (we, the majority), have the authority to so compel you. And whether you like to think of it this way or not, it is your own defense that you’re paying for, as well as mine. But I wouldn’t say that making you pay for the common defense is one of my rights, part of the life, liberty, etc. list. That’s a different story. And now, you have the legal authority, (you, the majority) to compel me or some third party to pay into your health care insurance. On paper, it reads differently. But if by law the insurance company must take all comers, regardless of preexisting conditions, then you’re not really buying insurance. You’re receiving an entitlement, at somebody else’s expense, if you do have that preexisting condition, or you’re funding somebody else’s entitlement, out of your own pocket, if you don’t.
