Actually, the Russian textbooks sitting in my bookcase were produced under the CCCP, so I have a slight inkling. Most of my Russian is gone, but I still remember the feeling of reading them and seeing the propaganda in the writings. It was subtle, but pervasive.

We were told about the Russian New Years, and how it was the bigger holiday.

What, exactly did you do on New Year’s Day (as opposed to New Year’s Eve.) My point was that, in America, the real holiday is the day before, but everything is closed today. Today is the official holiday, but there’s nothing to do today, not really.
