The Dick Cavett Show was one of my favorites.

Dick Cavett, Steve Allen, and Johnny Carson stand out in my mind as TV chat show hosts who pointedly didn’t assume their audience was a bunch of nit-wits. Letterman still has his moments, but most of his moments happened 15-20+ years ago. I find Paris Hilton more likable and less nauseating than Jay Leno, and that’s saying… something
