Blogs go through these kinds of melt-downs from time to time. It happened at Slate when I was there in 2000-2003, it happened on Craigslist on a food forum, and all the sane people left. It’s even happened on dKos before, back when bush 43 was still president. And it’s happened here…just ask Mandy.

Point is, once the story dies down, so will the self immolation.

These periodic purges, which are almost always driven by the more extreme elements, are why much of our political culture is counterproductive. Eventually it alienates the more moderate and reasonable people. Site like Dkos do serve a function in pushing for more progressive candidates but I think ultimately they do as much damage by alienating people they should be trying to persuade.
