Yes, projection, but to some extent you can’t blame Trump because bad people support him. If a mass murderer publicly supports Candidate A, that doesn’t mean Candidate A supports mass murder.

While that’s logical in formal terms, it fails in political terms because Candidate A always has the option of renouncing the mass murderer and repudiating his support. Trump has never even hinted at renouncing David Duke or the alt-right racists.
