I am not averse to spanking a child or even using a belt but that is abuse by modern standards. As someone with experience in Alt Lifestyles/BDSM I would say that a cane/switch is a hard limit for a lot of people because of the level of pain they inflict and the fact that they do welt/break skin. To use one on a child, to me, is unacceptable on any level. There’s a reason why we cringe when we see canes that teachers used “back in the day” in one room school houses.
