It is acceptable in the English-speaking world to refer to Roma as Gypsies, including the academic setting. Though, as I said, this may be changing.

IOW: Why do you think terms and words become “un-PC” (which I think is a bogus concept anyhow)? It’s certainly not a purely subjective call.

That’s a different question from whether or not the word is PC at this moment.
