At the beginning of a campaign, itās never clear which candidate is going to catch on and emerge triumphant. Even a candidate who doesnāt register at the beginning can eventually capture the public fancy; higher polling opponents can drop out for a variety of reasons ā health, scandal, family tragedy, or yelling (e.g. Dean). I donāt contribute at the beginning because I usually donāt have a definite favorite and, when I do, the person never lasts long :- ) (e.g John Glenn in 1984 and Wesley Clark in 2004!).
It would be different if the hopefulls used the money to push their own ideas, or record if they have one. We canāt trust them not to use it to do the Republicansā dirty work.
