re: #307 ggt

I think part of the issue is that the autism spectrum is not at all narrow. Asperger Syndrome has become more well known(when my son was little,AS was not even known as a diagnosis in the U.S. He was given a diagnosis of PDD-NOS at age 5,pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified)and it’s become,IMO overdiagnosed. We have a tendency to do that in this country and then things level out after we learn more.

Simply not enough is known about autism to say it’s caused by any one or even a combo of things. I tend to lean towards a genetic predisposition mixed with environmental factors as the explanation I’ve given my son about his AS. We don’t get hung up too much on why or how it happened, though that has it’s place. I’m more concerned with how to live in a society that has a pretty hard heart when you’re different. We like to talk about being inclusive of people with disabilities of all sorts, but in my family’s experience, hoo boy is there a long, long way to go. Especially with people who are not immediately identifiable as having a neurological disorder like some of the less severe types of autism.
