Crap, I remember the Blizzard of ‘78. I made the young and immortal decision to drive from Cincinnati to Ann Arbor and ended up spending several days in the Ohio National Guard Armory in Lima.
It actually turned out to be a really good weekend. I’m an amateur radio operator, so they put me in charge of the radio room for dispatching duty. My younger sister was put in charge of mess hall. Our friend (who was our driver) and some stranded truckers, who also took refuge at the Armory, went out with the NG to rescue people on I-75, and also check on semi-trucks and their cargo.
The day we left, we were all informally made members of the Ohio National Guard.
I still have my shoulder patch and pin.
Best storm disaster ever for me.

You got caught in that one? That was a huge event in Ohio.

I remember up in Mansfield Ohio where my brothers still reside, A trucker was missing and they found his rig out in a field trapped under a huge drift off of Rt 13 north of town. He couldn’t see the road and drove right off straight on a big old gentle curve. They knew he was somewhere alive because he used his CB radio. It took them almost two days to find the dang truck under the drift. Luckily he had some small snacks and reached out and grabbed some snow for water.

I was in Columbus just out of college. The city was shut down for days in that one.
