Are lizards haram? If so, why?

Well, lizards sure aren’t kosher, and IIRC correctly, Torah says that if they get into the food supply, you not only toss the food, you break the vessels.

Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a general Middle Eastern ‘thing’ about them, although I rather like the little guys. Wonder if the food rules developed because they carry salmonella or something?
