The old CIA/Army Special Forces Improvised Munitions Black Book included a how-to on creating dust explosions (which are actually a primitive category of thermobaric munition, about two notches below a FAE). I won’t go into details, but it involved any reasonably easily-obtained form of HE and a “cover”; gasoline, flake painter’s aluminum, whatever.

Also lighting the fuze and running like hell.

I’d suggest not letting The Kid get his hands on that book, just for your own peace of mind.

That book has some great stuff, but the techniques can be quite dangerous to the person making such improvised munitions.
It gives you a chance to do some damage and escape from behind enemy lines when you could get killed anyway, but it isn’t anything I’d choose to do unless the consequences were worse.
