He reconciled to a great extent, but yes, he was racist both in policy and attitude when younger.

Even his reconciliation was still, to my eyes, racist.

Buckley’s editorial “Why the South Must Prevail” spoke out explicitly in favor of white supremacy in the South. It argued that “the central question that emerges… is whether the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas where it does not predominate numerically? The sobering answer is Yes – the White community is so entitled because, for the time being, it is the advanced race.”

It’s ‘cultural’ racism rather than ‘ethnic’ racism, but it amounts to the same thing in the end.

The phrase, “for the time being” is interesting. If it means what I think it means, why didn’t he come out and say strong education for all must happen, positive steps must be taken to help families with broken societal skills to relearn what was taken from them, so that all Americans can be equally American…

or am I reading too much into it? :)
