The last time I can think of a VP pick being that sort of “expand the field” sort of pick was Edwards in 2004. North Carolina hadn’t voted for the Democratic ticket since 1980 (and didn’t in 2004). But otherwise most of the choices that I can think of weren’t the type that would change the map, as it were.
