According to @axios’s @jonathanvswan, who interviewed President Trump yesterday, and has been speaking with campaign sources, “There’s a scramble to figure out what happened.”

If you don’t charge for tickets, people are less likely to attend an event if there is any possible obstacle. And free tickets allow for mischief by those who are in opposition to the happening.

In this case, the base had two reasons to stay home

1. The fear that they wouldn’t get in because the facility was overbooked. It wasn’t worth waiting in line when there was a good chance they couldn’t get into the main arena anyway. No one had any clues as to the real number of interested parties.
2. Covid-19. The saner supporters weren’t going to attend an indoor arena where masks were discouraged. The locals were certainly aware of the concerns promoted by health professionals who wanted the rally to be cancelled.
