If they were Japanese, their torpedoes were indeed to be feared. Still, reading about the I-400, it’s interesting to note how much of their technology was German. Their periscopes were apparently made in Germany, and their aircraft’s inline engines were derivatives of the DB600.

That was a very interesting class. The US Navy quickly sank them all after the war so that they “couldn’t” turn one over to our Soviet allies. There may have been a lot of German tech there but as the Japanese have always been good at, the synthesis of the whole became greater than the parts. Read a good piece somewhere (Smithsonian?) about them finding the sunken I-400s recently.
