re: #324 DaddyG

I’m really enjoying the Iain M Banks and Alistair Reynolds stuff. I’ve also gone back and re-read Poul Anderson and Heinlein lately. Its mind candy for me when work is done and I ride the bus home.

I’m a big fan of Banks and Bujold personally. Through a friend of mine I’ve been reading older stuff by Drake. Not reading much sci-fi recently in favor of filling out a few areas of military history. WW2 Pacifc Theatre for the most part, but also been reading Balkowski’s books on D-Day and the period immediately afterwards. (Both of these aligning with war gaming. The former with a game called “Silent War” and the latter with a solitaire “D:DAY Omaha Beach” game*.)

* - Which is simply nasty in certain facets. Balkowski writes about one of the assault companies essentially getting annihilated in front of one of the German defense positions and if you can easily watch the game generate the same result. (The history on this company in the invasion is very sketchy since practically no one survived the assault to make a report about what really happened to them.)
