I used to love Italy as a kid. But they’re being outright goddamn fascists about the Roma these days. Even most liberal Italians justify it with the old, tired arguments that were used on the Jews back in the day; that they’re crooks, that they’ll never assimilate, that they should just go away.

The arguments are old and tired, and not quite false. If you feel a tiny hand in your pocket in Florence, and you spin your elbow around to clear it, you have an excellent chance to smash a 9 yr old Gypsy girl on the bridge of the nose and feel shitty about it for the rest of the day.
