I can only wonder if this was a veiled reference to the (now debunked) folk tale that gained popularity among the far right about the US Army using blankets to spread the smallpox virus, and causing an epidemic in the early 1800s that nearly wiped out several tribes.

The tale of the blankets may be debunked, but disease wiped out more Native people than bullets and starvation.
