You can buy a used Mercedes for less than the price of a new Toyota Yaris.
It’s a very dated example, but a friend of mine in high school drove a M-B she bought for just $300. It was a boat, but roomy and very safe (for the occupants, anyway). A diesel Mercedes can run for a million miles or more.
But upkeep is a pain in the wallet. The parts are expensive, and you have to find an independent mechanic to avoid the dealerships picking your pocket. That was why a doctor friend traded in his M-B for an Oldsmobile. Less panache, but more practical.
