Then you’ve got Douhat’s pining for the WASPs. Yeah I don’t miss snobby social clubs that ban Jews, Catholics, & Blacks as members and an establishment convinced of their superiority because of their socioeconomic status.

ESPECIALLY since I remember what went on in my home town of Ambridge PA before the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964.

People of color were “asked” to stay away from the borough pool.

Stores were “restricted”. People of color could not shop at Penney’s. They went to Sears.

“Fraternal Orders” were also “restricted” denying Catholics membership.

We had a “Turner’s Athletic Club” for whites only.

The YMCA in the next town didn’t admit people of color or Jews.

All stores closed on Sunday which hit Jews in the pocketbook because they did not have their stores or offices open on Saturday.

And on and on it went…
