Lee was a tactical genius and above average strategically, but just like the Japanese in the Pacific in the 1940’s, he was working against an inexorable clock. The Union had the blockade, the industrial might of the foundries of the North, and the manpower. It was only a matter of finding the right man to start grinding away the finely trained and highly spirited soldiers that comprised the core of the Rebel Army, and the raw recruits being dragged in with sub-standard weaponry would be easy pickings.
