Wingnuts use the Kessler quote to “prove” that LBJ “tricked” Blacks into voting Democrat with welfare and food stamps. The idea that Blacks will vote for whoever gives them “free stuff” is just completely racist as fuck.

That claim dates back to the Reconstruction Period since butthurt started then with the “carpetbaggers” trying to help the recently freed slaves in trying to get established as independent farmers who indeed needed such help given the lack of equipment, livestock, etc. at the time.
