If it can be shown that Trayvon was shot while Zimmerman was straddling him, or that any injuries that Zimmerman sustained were inconsistent with his story or in no way life-threatening, then it ceases being a “self-defense” case.

Exactly. The physical evidence — the clothes that both of them were wearing, the autopsy report for Trayvon, the medical reports for Zimmerman, etc. will all make the most difference, I think.
