I haven’t been able to identify the specific fallacy of the ‘you haven’t served so you don’t understand’ meme about DADT. It just reeks of a cop out.

So far I’ve been retaliating with ‘you don’t know what it’s like to be gay so you have no understanding of gay issues.’

To my mind, the fallacy is that many gay people have served, and many straight people who have served believe that DADT was a bad thing. So, who am I supposed to believe? David Petraeus and my friend Mirele who was in the Navy for ten years, (out to everyone, BTW), or John McCain? How do I choose, except by what else I believe about equality and justice?
