I think the whole Komen debacle really throws two (related) aspects of contemporary US politics into sharp relief:

1) There is no such thing as an apolitical movement. Any cause will eventually be drawn into the general battle royale between Democrats and Republicans.

2) The Republicans’ primary objective is to extend their power through whatever means possible. Their fundamental ideology is one of wielding power over others, and so it makes perfect sense to use their influence in one sphere of activity to exert their ideology against another sphere of activity, even if those spheres are only tangentially related (and may in fact have some activities that are complementary, as is the case with Komen and PP).
