I had a couple customers that treated their employees like dogs. I’ve always been under the impression people will work harder, and care about quality, if they’re working for someone they think will take care of them. I think respect works better than fear. If they’re working out of fear they’ll eventually stick it to you.

My roommate’s girlfriend’s boss owns a reasonably successful optometry practice, and has a saying: “pay peanuts, get monkeys.”

If only more employers were like him…
