Hard to say, but the demands placed on “educated” persons have declined: back then, you were expected to know a classical language (Latin or Greek), a modern foreign language (usually French or German), to be able to recite poems and Bible verses from memory, produce three-dimensional sketches and drawings, read music, and understand rhetoric and symbolic logic.

Nowadays you get by with two years of Spanish, ten-finger typing skills and an art appreciation class.
