You all forget.

Hobbits have a higher tolerance for extreme high temperatures than a normal human.

Sure, it doesn’t say that explicity, but they did wander around that volcano, so it must be the case.

Case closed.

Even if that is the case, although the lava lake in Mount Doom was somewhat active, it still did not show at all the proper behavior regarding formation of a crust.*

* It would have looked significantly less awesome this way, so I understand, but let’s not pretend there was any actual real science going on here.
