From what I understand of the voluntary manslaughter defense, it only requires that the defendant had a “unreasonable but honest” belief that what the killing was neccessary. If that’s upheld, the implications for anyone working in the abortion area are terrifying.

Volokh covered this, and held out some hope that the defense would be denied; the statue mentions this:

(a) A person is justified in the use of force against another when and to the extent it appears to such person and such person reasonably believes that such force is necessary to defend such person or a third person against such other’s imminent use of unlawful force.

Since the doctor was performing legal abortions, his “imminent use of… force” was not unlawful. The defense shouldn’t be allowed. Here’s hoping?
