Kennedy made that speech precisely because the protestants that included the evangelical fundies were worried (fucking freaking out really) about a Catholic having that much power. Afraid he might try to weaken the separation of church and state in this country as well as the protestants more progressive view of birth control to further a Roman Catholic agenda.
Now all of a sudden Evangelicals and many other protestant sects want to do exactly that.
