It is helpful to know the law. If one doesn’t know the law, it’s helpful to do what is asked of you. If you don’t know the law, it isn’t helpful to pretend you you know the law. Proclaiming “I know my rights” when you don’t will land you in the back of a paddy wagon.

Hint. “Papers” generally are not required. If the cop is going to haul you away because he/she is unreasonable and you want to burn money paying your lawyer, be a jerk and press the issue. But remember the law can be complicated and you may lose anyway. Circumstances dictate what is required.

Finally, being an ass*hole increase the chances you appear to know less about the law than the average ass*hole except if you happen to be a Supreme Court Justice.
