Yeah, that’s a thing in white working class neighborhoods where my kids spent a lot of time (out of economic necessity we had to live there), even though they were exposed to educated people.
A genuine “anti-intellectual” sentiment resides in those kinds of neighborhoods often passed on by the parents. More important to get a job right out of HS, or even quit altogether and work to get some money, out of short-sightedness and lack of alternatives and sometimes, help w/family finances, although that wasn’t a huge issue.
