I find it amusing to talk policy with libertarians because I always end up sounding the most practical. I think in some fields libertarians have the right idea but they’re too focused on an absolutist position economics especially to see the big picture.

There are things I can admire with regard to libertarianism as a philosophy; however, it’s pretty obvious that like Marxism, it has too optimistic a view of human nature. It’s fairly obvious to me that as a governing philosophy, libertarianism would fail - it would lead to chaos.

We have a left-libertarian party here in the Czech Republic, the Pirate Party, and they just got elected into the Chamber of Deputies; they are learning to compromise, which I see as a promising sign. They have some solid ideas and as long as they can manage to temper their idealism with pragmatism, I think they’ll be a force to reckon with in the future here. They’re certainly a damn sight better than some of the other parties here, which range from outright Stalinist to quasi-fascist to oligarchial.
