Years ago, I saw a display on the beginnings of the welfare missionary system for the LDS church. They had a copy of the “model home” designed for poor central Americans. One of the chief factors was the need to make the one-room house out of materials that wouldn’t kill you if they landed on you. (Although mudslides were still a danger; even in the US a mudslide will kill you.)
This won’t work for Haiti, because they don’t have the land to make one-story houses in Port au Prince. I’ve just been reminded of the display this last two weeks.
